To the Beloved Community of Airdrie United Church:
“In the bulb there is a flower, in the seed an apple tree…” There is so much waiting to grow here! For 115 years, the people of this church have come together for the good of this community, and to create a place of worship for all. This April we will celebrate Holy Week and Easter and then, on the last weekend of the month, we will gather together to celebrate the heritage we share and the future we seek.
“In cocoons, a hidden promise; butterflies will soon be free!” We live the words from ‘The Hymn of Promise” from the Palm Sunday Parade, through the sharing at the last supper, the sorrow in remembrance on Good Friday and the joy of Easter Sunday . All of our Holy Week services are places for families to gather and remember the story of Jesus’ last week in Jerusalem.
From Easter we will move to the weekend of April 28-30 to celebrate the 115th anniversary of this congregation! On Friday April 28 we will gather for a roast beef dinner and celebration with music and storytelling and a photo ‘tribute’ of our history. On Saturday 29, visit the church building to explore our history at 1pm. From 2-4 enjoy Tea and Fashion show in the church hall.
Sunday Morning, the 30th, join in a Worship Celebration. At the end of the service, we will take a commemorative photo of the congregation and historic building. Then we can all enjoy some anniversary cake! Tickets for the dinner and fashion show are available on Sunday mornings and from the church office during the week until we are sold out.
But that is not all! We look forward to May, gathering for a congregational meeting, where our Joint Search Committee will present the successful candidate for minister for the congregation’s approval. We anticipate calling this meeting towards the end of April. This will mark the beginning of a new pastoral relationship July 1, 2017, an exciting time in the life of the congregation.
To mark the 115th Anniversary and the new beginning in ministry, we are making a photo directory. The professional photographer will be at the church May 9,10,11,12 and 13. All individuals or families who have their photo taken will receive a free photo directory. If you wish, you may also purchase photos directly from the photographer. The congregation’s 115th anniversary photo will also be available for purchase.
This April, we will remember the past, for it shapes and marks us. We look to the future with hope. And we live in the present, marked by God’s love, filled with the spirit.
I look forward to seeing all of you this month to celebrate the new life of faith at Easter, and the new life springing up in the middle of this
