Lenten Note: Beautiful Things out of the Dust

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

-Gungor, Beautiful Things

Today marks Ash Wednesday, a time when we are reminded not only that we have come out of dust, but that to dust we shall return (Genesis 3:19c, NRSV). Our life is a gift, and the season of lent points us towards this mortal gift, inviting us into a time of reflection and penitence. How might we re-connect with God, and experience the gift of life in the way that God intended?

Many are familiar with lent as the season of giving something up. However, this ‘giving something up’ comes with a negative connotation of sadness, suffering, and punishment. In this way, some people dread this season and refrain from fully participating.

Others don’t mind giving something up from a self-improvement perspective like giving up chocolate to lose weight or shopping less to save money. However, in doing this, they forget about how God fits into that decision.

So, what if lent is not as grim as we think and instead, a beautiful reason to intentionally bring us into a closer relationship with the one who creates, loves, and forgives?

Can we look at lent as a time of getting rid of the internal barriers and outward distractions that separate us from the healing and transformative love of being in relationship with God? How might we make space for this God to enter the most broken places of our hearts and minds and surround us with grace and forgiveness?

Maybe this space does come from giving up chocolate or shopping. Maybe it comes from giving up unhealthy eating habits, or Netflix binging. Or maybe it comes from adding something into our lives like a morning devotional, or a daily prayer routine. Whatever you choose, through repentance and reflection, I hope that the practice of giving something up is filling your life with a stronger sense of the need for God and a deeper kind of faith in your life because,

God makes beautiful things out of dust and out of us! How will we live into that truth more fully as the people of God?
